Possible reason for Mahathir blaming muftis?

Malaysiakini - Don't blame us for Memali, muftis tell Dr M (extracts):

Memali 1985

On Saturday, Mahathir chided muftis at the time for not speaking out against Amanat Hadi – an infamous address by current PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, which many believe instigated the followers of Kedah PAS leader Ibrahim Mahmud (or Ibrahim Libya) to kill police officers.

Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria said it was particularly unfair to accuse muftis of not doing anything to prevent the incident as the then government under Mahathir rarely consulted Islamic scholars on most issues.

Harussani was quoted as saying in Sinar Harian that Mahathir's accusation is nothing but an attempt to absolve himself for the violence.

[...]

Pahang mufti Abdul Rahman Osman concurred, claiming that it is wrong for Mahathir to blame muftis for not doing anything at the time.

He was quoted as saying in Utusan Malaysia that Amanat Hadi was just a PAS' view, not a fatwa that could have been challenged.

Meanwhile, in response to Mahathir's attack on the muftis, PAS party president Hadi Awang, the very author of the 'Amanat Hadi' retorted (as reported by MM Online) that:

Islamic leaders in 1985 could not comment on the Memali Incident for fear of reprisal from the Mahathir administration then, and that ........ political interference by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s government could be seen in the way judges and police chiefs had been removed during the latter’s rule.

What do you think?

Why has Mahathir blamed the muftis ONLY NOW?

Suspicious-minded kaytee (wakakaka) reckons Mahathir in blaming the muftis for the tragic outcome of the Memali Incident has launched a preemptive attack against the possibility of the federal and Kelantan governments calling for and convening a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into that Incident, gnam gnam just before GE14.

Memali 1985

Mahathir saw the serious propaganda effect against him in the recent RCI on the Bank Negara FOREX loss of RM31.5 Billion, and doesn't want a repeat attack on his reputation again, especially just before the general elections. It's the inevitable consequences of his name being smeared, seared & smudged that he dreads.

Politically he may not survive another such attack through the notional RCI revelations where his name, reputation and alleged insensitivity will be dragged through mud, shit and blood in the Malay Heartland.

The Memali Incident where 14 local Muslim civilians and 4 policemen died has been a very sensitive issue amongst the conservative Muslim community since 1985, some 32 years ago.

Deaths in Memali 1985

Even worse, Mahathir has been particularly vulnerable on this issue ever since former DPM Musa Hitam spilled the beans that Mahathir was STILL in KL during the Memali Killings and not in China as was originally believed by most people.

Though Musa Hitam as then Home Affairs Minister accepted responsibility for the outcome of that Incident, the recently revealed fact of then-PM Mahathir being in country whilst the killings occurred in Memali has thrown the direct responsibility back at Mahathir.

Mahathir's more than 30-years of diam-diam-buat-ta'tahu with his deputy taking the blame has only made him look sneaky, and perhaps even raised more suspicions and questions.

I wonder, just wonder, whether the PAS' 3-decades of anger, hatred and implacable bitterness at Mahathir for the Memali deaths had been the root cause of its supporters describing the then-PM as the cruel Mahafiraun (Pharaoh).

  1. It would be hilariusly laughable, if it were not so sad that Ktemoc sounds like excusing Islamist extremism symptomatic in Memali, just in order to Hentam Mahathir.

    1. Monsterball, you are fond of reckless accusations - please show me in this post where I have excused Islamist extremism symptomatic in Memali?

My post is to seek answers on why Mahathir has waited 32 years before he accuses the muftis.

You OTOH have been making excuses for Mahathir

    2. "Mahathir's accusation is nothing but an attempt to absolve himself for the violence"

The statement was Harusani's but the colored emphasis was yours.

    1. I do not see how the article in Din's blog, written by Hazlan Zakaria, enlighten us?

Hazlan wrote: It is true that Mahathir may be seen by many to have started the practice of abusing the law for political persecution, namely the use of the draconian Internal Security Act 1960 to detain his political rivals and opponents.

But he has partially repented, with his “qualified,” “customary,” election manifesto- smelling apology, and said what is perhaps to him, the hardest word: “Sorry.”

It may be symbolic, but it has even been accepted as political reparation by some in the family of his once-protégé-turned-nemesis-turned-political-ally-of-convenience, jailed de-facto opposition-slash-PKR leader, Anwar Ibrahim.

Some, like constitutional law expert Abdul Aziz Bari (photo), may yet count the former premier’s sins,

But hasn't Hazlan's But he has partially repented, with his “qualified,” “customary,” election manifesto- smelling apology, and said what is perhaps to him, the hardest word: “Sorry” missed out Mahathir's subsequent MM Online's article "Dr M: Saying ‘sorry’ doesn’t mean I was wrong" at 08:20 PM on Saturday 30th December 2017.

So how has Hazlan's article help us understand Mahathir better other than apologises for him?

    3. Both pot and kettle sama sama hitam. But given enough time to Klepto, let's say let him rule for another 20 years more, most likely this kettle will be hangus hitam to beat all shades of darkness, wakakaka.

All of us know that Ktemoc can ONLY see the black pot, but the big elephant kettle who is also very black, is mysteriously invisible to him. Methinks his thinking is in line with Klepto's " Cash is King" wakakaka.

  3. kt

your motives and intentions are megapixel, it's futile to deny... its embarrassing to see you wriggle like a worm

we welcome All RCIs not a UCI (umno commission of inquiry) everyone wants to know the truth, but if the gomen is selective then whatever RCI they decide to have becomes a politically motivated persecution that carries no value

lks was given the forex RCI now I guess its hadi's turn wakikikiki

    1. wakakaka, I don't think you understand the meaning of "wriggle like a worm" - perhaps you can show me and at the same time stop your claimed "embarrassment" for me, wakakaka again - again please explain how I embarrassed you?.

my post has been about an analysis as to the motive behind Mahathir's 32-year late accusation of the muftis - in other words, why is he doing it NOW. My guess is he fears another RCI (dodgy or otherwise) that will harm his reputation - that's all so don't overprotect your idol, wakakaka again - it tells me you are on the defensive

even politically motivated RCI, which most RCIs in Malaysia have been (including those during Mahathir's time) have their use, political use that is. so don't dismiss the powers of a RCI

what gave you the impression Maddy is my idol? I believe everyone should be allowed a chance to redeem themselves, you may have your doubt about him but your single minded attacks expose your motives

But we all have to bear with this lah...GE is just round the corner, so it will become even more frenetic.

But just to give you one tip....the more you paint the black even blacker, and yet at the same time to totally ignore the other one who is also truly in black hue too, the more glaring your hypocrisy will be seen by all.

  4. In 1985, at the time Memali occurred, names like "Al-Qaeda", "Daesh", "ISIS", "Taliban", "Houthi", "Al-Shabaab", "Boko Haram", had not yet surfaced, but I understood very well the dangerous threat constituted by such groups.

The authorities carried out a necessary operation to suppress the threat, but unfortunately, some innocent people died. I don't count the armed militants as innocent.

Whether or not Mahathir was in the country at the time, he was accountable.

To me, Mahathir has nothing apologise for over the conduct of the operation.

The only murky matter was whether he was in the country at the time, and to me that is a trivial pursuit.

So what if its either way ?

    1. if it was a trivial matter, according to your pro mahathir views, why then did Mahathir hide it from the public for 32 years? It was Musa Hitam that revealed the fact
