Envoys to Iraq, including those from Pakistan and Bahrain, are scooting off, just because the Egyptian bloke was killed. Iraq has told them to hang on to their b*lls and defy al-Qaeda's blackmail. It said:
"If the rest of the diplomatic missions from Europe and the neighbouring countries give in, this means that all the capitals of the world will be subjected to blackmail."
"Giving in to these groups and responding to their political demands means encouraging them to continue such actions."
I do agree. However, there are a couple of issues that need to be solved beforehand.
Firstly, the legitimacy of the Iraqi government must be established, which may only come from UN supervision of an inclusive general elections, and not one determined-dominated-influenced by one superpower or where 20% of the population have been marginalised.
The Sunnis must be brought back into the fold, and not indirectly ostracised through officially sanctioned persecution. The deaths of 9 bricklayers recently were Sunnis tortured in the most heinous manner by Kurdish or Shiite dominated Police commandos.
Secondly, once the above has been established, the new and legitimately constituted Iraqi government must provide satisfactory protection for those envoys.
It’s not an unusual request – in fact it’s the responsibility of a government, any government, to provide adequate protect for the envoys in its country. It’s not the obligation of the envoys to be suicidal, by staying in an extremely turbulent and violent Baghdad where there’s inadequate security, except possibly for the US Embassy.
