Chinese Chess Downunder

The Aussie PM loves to play Chinese chess.

Washington has grave concerns with Howard’s growing economic relations with China. China has signed hugh contracts with Australia for coal and gas, and intends to include uranium ore as well. The Chinese have a very hearty appetite for energy materials. The Aussies are happy to supply them.

Washington is not impressed with the new China-Aussie trade closeness. To make it worse, Australia has already mentioned that she won’t be involved in any Taiwan hoo-haa with China. Additionally, Australia was noticeably absent from US-backed talks to discuss China's rise as a superpower. Perhaps Australia did not wish to offend China - remember, the customer is always right.

Back to the chess, Chinese pao (cannon) takes American ma (horse or knight). Aussie takes the cake (and the beer).

Yamseng, mate!
